Why Do Astrology Sites Give Different Results for the Same Birth Data?

Same birth data, different rising sign, houses, or aspects? Troubleshoot historical time zones, coordinates, zodiac, house systems, orbs, and ephemerides.

You enter the same date, time, and city on two astrology sites. One says Libra rising, the other Scorpio. One puts Venus in the 7th house, another in the 8th. One shows a square aspect that the other does not.

That does not always mean one site is simply wrong.

Sometimes there is a calculation error. But most differences can be traced to six areas:

  1. historical time-zone handling,
  2. birthplace and coordinates,
  3. zodiac system,
  4. house system,
  5. aspect-orb settings,
  6. astronomical ephemeris, coordinate, and rounding choices.

The key idea is: birth data that looks identical on the screen may not be converted into the same astronomical instant inside the software.

What happens between your birth data and the chart?

You type:

September 14, 1994
9:35 PM
Chicago

But an astronomical chart engine needs more than those three lines.

The process is roughly:

place → coordinates → historical time zone → UTC instant → planetary positions → zodiac/house settings → astrological output

A difference anywhere in that chain can change the result.

Example

Imagine entering:

Toronto, 1995, 2:30 PM

into two sites.

Site A resolves the local civil-time rule that actually applied on the birth date.

Site B uses a modern UTC offset as if it had always applied.

Both screens show “2:30 PM,” but the astronomical engine may receive a different UTC instant.

That matters especially for:

  • the rising sign,
  • house cusps,
  • the fast-moving Moon.

1. Historical time zones: one of the least visible sources of error

A time zone is not simply “Chicago = UTC-6” or “London = UTC+0.”

Governments can change:

  • UTC offsets,
  • whether daylight saving is observed,
  • DST start and end dates.

The IANA Time Zone Database records historical civil-time rules so software can determine which offset applied at a particular place and date.

For example, U.S. daylight-saving transition dates changed in 2007.

So:

“Chicago uses this rule today, therefore the same rule applied in 1995.”

is not a safe assumption.

When should you suspect this?

If two sites show:

  • most planet signs the same,
  • but a noticeably different rising sign,
  • and shifted house cusps,

birth time and historical time-zone handling should be high on the checklist.

Think: If a calculator gives you a rising sign but never tells you how your local birth time was converted to UTC, how much of the calculation can you actually inspect?

2. Birthplace: a city name is not the final input

Rising signs and houses depend on geographic location.

The software needs:

  • latitude,
  • longitude.

GeoNames and similar databases can map a place to coordinates and a time-zone identifier.

The duplicate place-name problem

Some names are easy.

Others are not:

  • London,
  • Springfield,
  • Córdoba,
  • Santiago,
  • San José.

If the wrong city is selected, you may also get the wrong:

  • coordinates,
  • time zone,
  • rising sign,
  • houses.

A transparent calculator should show enough country/region information to make the match clear.

3. Tropical vs. sidereal: check this first when the difference is large

If the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars all appear shifted by roughly the same amount, one site may be tropical and the other sidereal.

That is not necessarily a calculation error. It is a different zodiac reference.

Sidereal systems can also use different ayanamshas, so two sidereal calculators can disagree by a few degrees.

The quick diagnostic is:

If many planets shift together, check the zodiac system before anything else.

4. House system: same planet, different house number

This result is completely possible:

Venus = 18° Libra on both sites.

But:

  • Site A: Venus in the 7th house
  • Site B: Venus in the 8th house

The planetary calculation may be identical.

The house system may not be.

Placidus vs. Whole Sign

Using Zodelya's fixed guide definitions:

  • Placidus: houses are not required to be equal and the method breaks down mathematically at extreme latitudes.
  • Whole Sign Houses: the entire zodiac sign containing the Ascendant becomes the 1st house, and each subsequent sign is one house.

Swiss Ephemeris documentation describes these as genuinely different house-construction methods and notes that Placidus cannot be calculated beyond the polar circles.

So if you are asking:

“Why did my Venus move to another house?”

the first question may be house system, not zodiac system.

5. Orb settings: why does one site show an aspect and another not?

The central aspect angles are straightforward:

  • conjunction 0°
  • sextile 60°
  • square 90°
  • trine 120°
  • opposition 180°

But planets do not need to sit at exactly 90° for an astrologer to call the relationship a square.

An allowed tolerance is used. That is the orb.

Suppose two planets are separated by:

94°

A site using a 6° square orb may include it.

Another site using a 3° orb may not.

The astronomical planet positions can be exactly the same while the aspect lists differ.

Some systems also use:

  • wider orbs for the Sun and Moon,
  • tighter orbs for minor aspects,
  • different rules for applying vs. separating aspects.

So an aspect “appearing” on one site does not automatically mean its planetary calculation is different.

6. How much can the ephemeris or calculation engine matter?

An ephemeris is the astronomical framework used to calculate or tabulate celestial positions through time.

A modern engine such as Astronomy Engine can calculate geocentric and heliocentric positions for the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and outer planets and validates its results against sources such as JPL Horizons.

If two good astronomical engines use the same:

  • UTC instant,
  • reference frame,
  • coordinate definition,

their basic planetary positions should be very close.

Small differences can still come from:

  • astronomical model,
  • precession/nutation settings,
  • true vs. mean coordinates,
  • topocentric vs. geocentric options,
  • rounding,
  • technical parameters such as Delta T.

Those usually do not explain enormous differences such as “Virgo on one site, Aries on another.”

For big discrepancies, check:

time → zodiac → coordinates → house system

before blaming the ephemeris.

“Same birth data” may not actually be the same input

A few common examples:

7:30 or 19:30?

An AM/PM mistake can completely change the rising sign.

What does 03/08/1990 mean?

One interface may interpret it as:

March 8

another as:

August 3

Good interfaces should avoid ambiguous date formats.

Was the birth time rounded?

If the family remembers:

“Around 9 in the morning.”

09:00 is not an exact timestamp.

A window such as 08:45–09:15 can noticeably move the rising degree and may change the rising sign near a boundary.

Did the site silently substitute noon?

Some calculators use 12:00 when time is unknown.

That may be a practical assumption for approximate planet positions.

It does not make the rising sign certain.

Generating a noon chart and knowing the birth time are not the same thing.

This table will not solve every case, but it narrows the investigation.

How to compare two calculators step by step

Step 1: Compare raw degrees

Do not look only at “Virgo.”

Compare:

Sun 21°14' Virgo

if the site displays it.

Step 2: Match zodiac systems

Make sure both are:

  • tropical

or

  • sidereal.

If sidereal, match the ayanamsha too.

Step 3: Check time and time format

Especially:

  • AM/PM,
  • minutes,
  • typing mistakes.

Step 4: Confirm the place and coordinates

Right city, right country?

Step 5: Check historical time-zone handling

Does the calculator say how the birth date was resolved?

Step 6: Match house systems

Compare Placidus with Placidus.

Compare Whole Sign with Whole Sign.

Step 7: Compare orb settings last

Only after the planetary positions match.

This turns “Which site is right?” into a much more specific technical question.

Why did Zodelya produce this result?

A transparent calculator should ideally be able to tell you:

  • which birthplace was matched,
  • which coordinates were used,
  • which historical time zone applied,
  • what UTC instant your birth time became,
  • which zodiac system was used,
  • which house system was used.

Zodelya treats birthplace, coordinates, and historical time-zone handling as part of the calculation. Planetary positions come from an astronomical engine.

Astrological interpretation is a separate layer after that.

That distinction matters:

a chart can be calculated correctly and an interpretation can still fail to describe you.

A description not fitting you does not automatically prove the astronomical position was wrong.

Think: When an astrology site gives you a description that feels uncannily accurate, do you inspect the calculation method too — or only judge it by how well the text seems to fit?

How do you identify a more trustworthy calculator?

Instead of looking for the single “most accurate astrology interpretation,” look for technical transparency.

Good signs:

  • it explains why birth time matters,
  • it does not pretend an unknown birth time is exact,
  • it identifies zodiac and house systems,
  • it handles historical time zones,
  • it separates astronomical calculation from astrological interpretation.

A warning sign is:

“Don't know your time? Enter 12:00 and we'll tell you your exact rising sign.”

That is false precision.

Frequently asked questions

If even my Sun sign is different with the same birth data, what should I check?

Start with tropical vs. sidereal zodiac, then verify that the date and time were interpreted the same way. A full-sign Sun difference is not caused by the house system; zodiac or date/time settings are more plausible.

Why is my rising sign different on two websites?

Possible causes include birth time, AM/PM, historical time-zone handling, birthplace coordinates, or zodiac system. The rising sign changes about every two hours on average, so it is much more time-sensitive than most planet signs.

Why are my planet signs the same but houses different?

The house system is the likely explanation. Placidus and Whole Sign can place the same planet in different house numbers even when its zodiac degree is identical.

One site shows a square and another does not. Which is wrong?

Neither has to be wrong. If their orb settings differ, one may include the aspect while the other excludes it. Compare the planet degrees first, then compare orb rules.

Can an ephemeris difference completely change my sign?

For a normal placement that is not right on a boundary, small differences between good astronomical ephemerides should not usually create a whole-sign jump. Check date, time, time zone, zodiac, and settings before assuming the ephemeris is the problem.

Which astrology site should I trust?

A description “feeling accurate” is not enough. A site is easier to audit if it explains its calculation settings, does not hide uncertainty in birth time, uses historical time zones, and makes its zodiac and house systems visible.
